How to write a cursive capital U

  1. Start a little below the top line with a small curve and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Curve around the bottom and swing up to the top line on the right.
  3. Pull a slant straight back down to the baseline and end with a curve up.

On these sheets capital U joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase u

  1. From the baseline, swing up to the midline and slant down to the baseline.
  2. Swing up to the midline again.
  3. Slant back down and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive u to other letters

Lowercase u is two upstrokes and two slants, like two i’s without dots. It starts and ends on the baseline. Its most important join is qu, where the exit of q runs straight into the first upstroke. After o, as in out and you, the join runs along the midline and the first upstroke is only a short slant down.

Keep the bottoms rounded and the tops pointed. Round tops make the u look like an n.

Cursive U and print U

Print u is a cup with a short line on the right, and cursive u is the same shape with an extra upstroke and an exit. Capital U is a large version of lowercase u with a curved start.

Questions

How do I tell cursive u from cursive w?

u has two upstrokes and ends on the baseline. w has three and ends at the midline with a short sidestroke.

Why does my child’s cursive u look like n?

The tops are rounded. In u the curves are at the bottom and the points at the top; in n it is the other way round.

Does cursive capital U join the next letter?

Yes. Its last slant ends on the baseline with a curve up, so the rest of a word such as Uncle follows without a lift.
