How to make Christmas tracing worksheets

  1. Pick a word set. Christmas words has 16 words from tree and star to reindeer and Christmas. Winter words has 15, such as snow, mitten, snowman and December. Short phrases has six, such as Merry Christmas and Dear Santa.
  2. Add your own words. One word or phrase per line; each line becomes its own page. Add the names of family members for a card or gift tag practice page.
  3. Choose the tracing style. Dotted letters are the classic choice. Rainbow draws hollow letters to trace again and again in red, green and other crayon colors, a good fit for the season. Light gray suits children who find dots hard to follow.
  4. Print or save as PDF. The whole set prints at once. Download PNG saves one image per page.

What each page looks like

Each page has one word. The first line shows it in solid letters with green starting dots and stroke order numbers and arrows, and the lines below repeat it across the line to trace. Short words like elf, toy and joy fit four or five times on a line; long ones such as Christmas and reindeer fit once or twice. Phrases are drawn a little smaller when they would not fit the line at the size you picked, and the page tells you when that happens.

There are no pictures on these pages: just the words, on red and blue handwriting lines, so they print quickly, save ink and leave room for a child to draw a picture in the margin.

Winter words for after the holidays

The Winter words set does not mention Christmas, so it works through January and February and in classrooms that keep holiday activities neutral: snow, cold, ice, hat, coat, scarf, boots, mitten, skate, cocoa, snowman, snowflake, winter, December, January. Months start with a capital letter, as they always do in English.

Ideas for December

  • A word a day. Print the Christmas set and use one page a day in December, like an advent calendar.
  • Writing to Santa. Trace Dear Santa, then switch to the handwriting worksheet generator and type a short letter to trace and copy.
  • Names for cards. Type the names of family members so the child can practice before writing them on cards and gift tags. For more name pages, use the name tracing worksheet generator.
  • Shapes first. For younger children not ready for words, the tracing lines and shapes page has stars, triangles (tree shapes) and circles (ornaments).

More themed words, such as colors, days and months, are on the word tracing worksheets page, and November has its own Thanksgiving tracing worksheets.

Questions

What age are these Christmas tracing worksheets for?

Preschool to first grade. Short words such as elf, toy, star and snow suit preschool and pre-K at the extra large or large size; longer words and phrases suit kindergarten and first grade.

Do the worksheets have Christmas pictures?

No. The pages are words only, on handwriting lines, so they print fast in black and white. Children can draw a tree or a star next to each word.

Can I make cursive Christmas worksheets?

Yes. Choose Cursive under Letters. The words are written in traditional US cursive, in light gray, a dotted outline or rainbow hollow letters.

Can I add my own holiday words?

Yes. Type any words or short phrases in the box, one per line. Each line becomes its own page.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account and no email. The words you type stay in your browser and are not sent to us.
