How to write capital P

  1. Pull a straight line down from the top line to the baseline.
  2. Go back to the top, out to the right and around to the middle.

How to write lowercase p

  1. Pull a line down from the dashed line to below the baseline.
  2. Start on the line halfway between the dashed line and the baseline. Go up and around to the right, down, and back to touch the line at the baseline.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with p

pig, pan, pen, pot, pup, pond.

The third page traces pig, pan and pen. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with P; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

b, h, k start with a straight line down, then add to the right. Practicing them together builds the same movement.

Questions

How do I stop p and q getting mixed up?

p starts with the line, like b. q starts with the circle, like a. If your child knows b and d, connect them: p is a b that goes down, q is a d with its line going down.

Should my child learn capital P or lowercase p first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase p?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just p. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Pp on one line instead.
