How to write capital Y

  1. Start at the top line on the left and slant down to the middle.
  2. Start at the top on the right and slant down to meet it in the middle, then pull straight down to the baseline.

How to write lowercase y

  1. Start at the dashed line on the left and slant down to the baseline.
  2. Start at the dashed line on the right and slant all the way down, below the baseline.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with y

yes, yak, yam, yell, yarn, yellow.

The third page traces yes, yak and yam. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with Y; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

v, w, x, k are made of slanted lines. Practicing them together builds the same movement.

Previous: X. Next: Z. All letters on one sheet: A to Z letter tracing worksheets.

Questions

Where does the tail of y go?

Below the baseline, down to the next line. The long slant starts at the right and goes all the way down; the short one from the left only reaches the baseline.

Should my child learn capital Y or lowercase y first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase y?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just y. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Yy on one line instead.
