How to make Thanksgiving tracing worksheets

  1. Pick a word set. Thanksgiving words has 14 words, from turkey, pie and corn to grateful and Thanksgiving. Fall words has 13, such as leaf, acorn, rake and scarecrow. Short phrases has five, such as Give thanks and I am thankful.
  2. Add your own words. One word or phrase per line; each line becomes its own page. Add the names of the people coming to dinner and use the pages as place card practice.
  3. Choose the tracing style. Dotted letters are the classic choice. Rainbow draws hollow letters to trace again in orange, brown, red and yellow like fall leaves. Light gray suits children who find dots hard to follow.
  4. Print or save as PDF. The whole set prints at once. Download PNG saves one image per page.

What each page looks like

Each page has one word. The first line shows it in solid letters with green starting dots and stroke order numbers and arrows, and the lines below repeat it across the line to trace. Short words like pie, owl and hay fit four or five times on a line; long ones such as Thanksgiving and scarecrow fit once or twice. Phrases are drawn a little smaller when they would not fit the line at the size you picked, and the page tells you when that happens.

There are no pictures, just the words on red and blue handwriting lines, so the pages print quickly in black and white and leave room for a drawing.

A thankful week

Thanksgiving is a good time to practice the words for what a child is thankful for. Try this over the week before the holiday:

  • Monday. Trace thanks and Thank you.
  • Tuesday. Trace family, then type the names of family members and trace those.
  • Wednesday. Trace I am thankful, then say out loud what for.
  • Thursday. Trace turkey, pie and corn, and find them on the table.
  • Friday. Write a short sentence such as I am thankful for my dog. with the kindergarten writing worksheets, which make trace and copy lines from any sentence.
