How to write capital R

  1. Pull a straight line down from the top line to the baseline.
  2. Go back to the top, out to the right and around to the middle.
  3. From the middle, slant down to the right, to the baseline.

How to write lowercase r

  1. Pull a short line down from the dashed line to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the line and curve over to the right, stopping just below the dashed line.

Words that start with r

rat, red, run, rug, rain, ring.

Questions

Why does my child’s r look like n?

Lowercase r starts like n but stops after the curve: it does not come back down. Tell the child to stop when the curve points to the right.

Should my child learn capital R or lowercase r first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase r?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just r. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Rr on one line instead.
