How to write capital Z

  1. Pull a line across the top, slant down to the left to the baseline, then pull across the bottom to the right, in one stroke.

How to write lowercase z

  1. Pull a line across at the dashed line, slant down to the left, then across the baseline to the right, in one stroke.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with z

zip, zoo, zap, zero, zebra, zigzag.

The third page traces zip, zoo and zap. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with Z; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

v, w, x use slanted lines. Practicing them together builds the same movement.

Previous: Y. All letters on one sheet: A to Z letter tracing worksheets.

Questions

Why does my child write z backwards?

Reversed z and s are common. Both start at the top: z goes across to the right first, then slants back. Saying "across, slant, across" while writing keeps the order.

Should my child learn capital Z or lowercase z first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase z?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just z. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Zz on one line instead.
