How to write capital N

  1. Start at the baseline on the left. Pull up to the top line, slant down to the baseline on the right, then pull straight up to the top line, all in one stroke.

How to write lowercase n

  1. Pull a short line down from the dashed line to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the line, over a hump to the right, and straight down to the baseline.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with n

net, nut, nap, nest, nose, nine.

The third page traces net, nut and nap. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with N; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

m, h, r go up and over a hump. Practicing them together builds the same movement.

Previous: M. Next: O. All letters on one sheet: A to Z letter tracing worksheets.

Questions

Why do n and u get mixed up?

They are the same shape turned over. n goes down, then up and over the hump. u goes down, around the bottom and up. Saying "n has a hat, u is a cup" makes the difference easy to remember.

Should my child learn capital N or lowercase n first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase n?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just n. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Nn on one line instead.
