How to write capital U

  1. Pull a line down on the left, curve around the bottom, and pull back up on the right to the top line, all in one stroke.

How to write lowercase u

  1. Pull a line down from the dashed line, curve around the bottom, and back up the right side.
  2. Pull a short straight line down the right side, from the dashed line to the baseline.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with u

up, us, under, umpire, uncle, umbrella.

The third page traces up, us and under. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with U; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

Questions

Does lowercase u need the line on the right?

Yes. In ball and stick print, u ends with a short line down on the right, which is what tells it apart from a v with a round bottom. It is also where the joining stroke comes from in cursive.

Should my child learn capital U or lowercase u first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase u?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just u. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Uu on one line instead.
