How to write capital D

  1. Pull a straight line down from the top line to the baseline.
  2. Go back to the top, out to the right and around in one big curve to the bottom.

How to write lowercase d

  1. Start just under the dashed line on the right and make a circle, around to the left, the same as for a.
  2. Pull a tall line down the right side, from the top line to the baseline.

On the first line of each page, the numbers and arrows show the order and direction of each stroke, and the green dots show where the pencil goes down.

Words that start with d

dog, dad, duck, dig, doll, drum.

The third page traces dog, dad and duck. Change it to any word you like, or to a name that starts with D; the name tracing worksheet generator repeats a name across every line.

Letters that start the same way

a, c, g, o, q start with the same circle. Practicing them together builds the same movement.

Questions

Why does my child write d backwards?

Reversed b and d are normal up to about age seven. The fix is the starting point: d always begins with the circle, like a, and the tall line comes second. If the child starts with the line, they are writing b.

Should my child learn capital D or lowercase d first?

Most preschool programs start with capitals, which are built from straight lines and big curves, then move to lowercase in kindergarten. For writing their name, teach it the way school will: a capital first letter, then lowercase.

Can I print only lowercase d?

Yes. Delete the other lines in the box and keep just d. To fill a whole page with one row of each, type Dd on one line instead.
