Cursive R: capital R and lowercase r

Three pages to trace: capital R, lowercase r, and rain, rose and rabbit joined. The letters print in light gray without arrows, so the steps below say where each stroke goes.

Each line becomes its own page. Keep Aa–Zz or type any words.

The first page with the default settings, as it prints on US Letter paper.

How to write a cursive capital R

  1. Start at the top line and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the slant, curve out to the right and around to the middle, making a small loop where the curve meets the slant.
  3. Kick a leg out and down to the baseline, and end with a curve up.

On these sheets capital R joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase r

  1. From the baseline, swing up a little past the midline to a point.
  2. Make a short flat step to the right.
  3. Slant down to the baseline and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive r to other letters

Lowercase r starts with an upstroke to a small point just above the midline. After b, o, v and w, which end high, there is very little room for that point: or, br and wr are the joins where r most often disappears. Keep the flat step visible.

r leaves from the baseline. In rr, as in carrot and berry, each r needs its own point and step.

Cursive R and print R

Print r is a short line and a small arch. Cursive r has a point, a flat step and a slant, and looks nothing like the print letter. Capital R is close to print R with loops added, and it joins the next letter.

Questions

Why does cursive r look so different from print r?

Cursive r grew out of the joining stroke: the upstroke rises to a point, steps across, and comes down. Nothing of the print arch is left. It is one of the letters worth a page of practice on its own.

How do you write or and br in cursive?

The o or b ends at the midline, so the join rises only a little to the point of the r, then steps across. Write the pair slowly and check that the step is still there.

My child’s cursive r looks like an i without a dot. Why?

The flat step is missing. After the point, move to the right along the top before slanting down.
