Printed sample: Cursive Q: capital Q and lowercase q
The first page with the default settings, as it prints on US Letter paper.

How to write a cursive capital Q

  1. Start a little above the baseline on the left and curve up to the top line and over to the right.
  2. Come down the right side in a big curve to the baseline.
  3. At the bottom, make a small loop to the left and finish with a wavy stroke out to the right.

On these sheets capital Q joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase q

  1. From the baseline, swing up to the midline, curve back to the left and around to close a small oval.
  2. Pull a slant down the right side, below the baseline.
  3. Make a loop that comes back up on the right and closes at the baseline, then end with a curve up.

Joining cursive q to other letters

q is nearly always followed by u, so qu is the join to learn: the loop of q closes on the right at the baseline and its exit runs straight into the first upstroke of the u. Going into q, as in equal, the stroke before arches over the oval as for a.

The common mistake is swinging the lower loop to the left, like g. Then the exit starts on the wrong side and the q reads as g.

Cursive Q and print Q

Lowercase q in cursive is still an oval with a tail, with the tail closed into a loop on the right. Capital Q is the most changed letter in the alphabet: it looks like a large 2, with no oval and no tail crossing it.

Questions

Why does cursive capital Q look like a 2?

Traditional US cursive draws capital Q as one sweeping stroke: up and over, down the right side, a small loop at the bottom and a wavy tail. Parents who learned a different chart are often surprised, but this is the Q on traditional US cursive charts.

How do you write qu in cursive?

Close the lower loop of the q on the right, at the baseline, then go straight up into the u without lifting. Practice it as a pair, then in queen and quiet.

Which way does the loop of cursive q go?

To the right. The tail goes down, turns, and comes back up on the right of the slant to close at the baseline. The loop of g goes the other way.
