The first page with the default settings, as it prints on US Letter paper.

How to write a cursive capital P

  1. Start at the top line and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the same slant to the top.
  3. Curve out to the right and around, back toward the slant at the middle.

On these sheets the letter after capital P starts on its own.

How to write a cursive lowercase p

  1. From the baseline, swing up to the midline.
  2. Pull a straight slant down well below the baseline, then come back up to the baseline.
  3. Make a rounded bump on the right that closes at the baseline, and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive p to other letters

Lowercase p starts with an upstroke from the baseline and, unlike b, leaves from the baseline after its bump closes. That makes pp in apple and puppy a smooth run: up, down, bump, and up again.

After o, as in top and hop, the join leaves the midline and dips before the long stroke down. A bump that does not close leaves p looking like a j.

Cursive P and print P

Both p’s hang below the baseline. In cursive the bump closes on the baseline and ends with an exit stroke. Capital P is near the print shape, slanted, with a bowl that curves back toward the stem but does not join the next letter.

Questions

How is cursive p different from cursive b?

b loops up to the top line and ends at the midline. p goes down below the baseline and ends on the baseline, so the next letter joins low.

Does the stem of cursive p have a loop?

Programs differ: some retrace the stem, others leave a narrow loop at the bottom. Either reads as p, as long as the bump on the right closes at the baseline.

Does cursive capital P join the next letter?

No. Its bowl ends at the slant, in the middle of the letter, so the next letter starts on its own, as in Pat.
