How to write a cursive capital N

  1. Start a little below the top line with a small curve forward and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the slant and make one big hump over to the right.
  3. Come down to the baseline and end with a curve up.

On these sheets capital N joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase n

  1. From the baseline, make a small hump up to the midline and slant down to the baseline.
  2. Make a second hump, slant down and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive n to other letters

Lowercase n joins in the same way as m, with an overcurve: an, in and un rise into a hump. After o, in on, the join runs along the midline and drops straight into the first hump, which is one of the most common joins in English.

n leaves from the baseline. In ng the exit has to rise to the midline and arch over into the oval of the g.

Cursive N and print N

Print n has one hump. Cursive n has two, counting the lead-in, which makes cursive n look like print m to a beginner. Capital N is a slant and one big hump.

Questions

Why does cursive n look like print m?

Cursive n starts with a hump over the top, then makes its own hump, so there are two. Count the slants instead: n has two slants down, m has three.

How do I tell cursive n from cursive u?

n goes over: humps on top, points at the bottom. u goes under: cups at the bottom, points at the top.

How do you write ng in cursive?

Finish the n on the baseline, then let the exit rise to the midline and curve back over into the oval of the g, as in sing and long.
