How to write a cursive capital M

  1. Start a little below the top line with a small curve forward and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the slant and make a hump over to the right and down to the baseline.
  3. Go back up for a second hump, come down to the baseline and end with a curve up.

On these sheets capital M joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase m

  1. From the baseline, make a small hump up to the midline and slant down to the baseline.
  2. Make a second hump and slant down.
  3. Make a third hump, slant down and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive m to other letters

Lowercase m starts with an overcurve, a small hump, so the join into it rises into a hump instead of a slanted upstroke: in am, em and um the stroke goes up and over. After o, the join runs along the midline and drops into the first hump.

m leaves from the baseline. In mm, as in summer, there are six humps in a row; keep them the same width.

Cursive M and print M

Print m has two humps. Cursive m has three, because the lead-in is a hump too. Capital M is a slant and two big humps, the first starting partway up the slant.

Questions

How many humps does a cursive m have?

Three in lowercase: the lead-in hump over the top, then two more. Print m has two, which is why children often write a cursive m that reads as n.

How do I keep the humps even?

Make each hump reach the midline and come back down as a slant parallel to the one before. Rounded, leaning humps spread out and make the m wide.

Does cursive capital M join the next letter?

Yes. Its last slant ends with a curve up at the baseline, so Mom and Mia are written without a lift.
