How to write a cursive capital L

  1. Start just below the midline on the left and swing up to the top line.
  2. Make a loop at the top and come down in a slant to the baseline.
  3. Make a small flat loop at the bottom, to the left, and finish with a curve under and up to the right.

On these sheets capital L joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase l

  1. From the baseline, swing up to the top line.
  2. Loop back to the left and pull a straight slant down to the baseline.
  3. End with a curve up.

Joining cursive l to other letters

Lowercase l is a tall e: one upstroke, one loop, one slant. It joins from and to the baseline, so all, bell and yellow run without a lift. After o and w, as in owl and bowl, the join leaves the midline and climbs to the top line.

In double l, both loops should be the same height and open; if they are squeezed shut, ll looks like a u.

Cursive L and print L

Print l is a single straight line. In cursive it becomes a tall loop. Capital L has a loop at the top and a small flat loop at the foot, nothing like the corner of print L.

Questions

How tall is the loop in cursive l?

Up to the top line, the same height as b, h and k. A loop that stops at the midline is an e.

Why does cursive capital L have two loops?

The top loop comes from the upstroke turning back, and the small flat loop at the bottom turns the slant into the curve under. Together they make the wavy L of traditional US cursive.

Does cursive capital L join the next letter?

Yes. It ends with a curve up at the baseline, so a name like Lily stays joined.
