The first page with the default settings, as it prints on US Letter paper.

How to write a cursive capital Y

  1. Start a little below the top line with a small curve and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Curve around the bottom and swing up to the top line on the right.
  3. Pull a long slant down below the baseline, loop back to the left and up, crossing at the baseline, and keep rising.

On these sheets capital Y joins the letter after it.

How to write a cursive lowercase y

  1. From the baseline, make a small hump up to the midline and slant down to the baseline.
  2. Swing up to the midline on the right.
  3. Pull a slant down below the baseline, loop back to the left, cross at the baseline and rise.

Joining cursive y to other letters

Lowercase y starts with an overcurve hump and ends with the rising stroke from its lower loop, like g, j and z. At the end of a word, as in day, key and happy, the exit simply trails off. In you it has to rise and arch over into the oval of the o.

The loop should close at the baseline; closing it lower drops the next letter below the line.

Cursive Y and print Y

Print y is two straight slants with a long tail. Cursive y has a rounded top half like u and a looped tail. Capital Y is a large U with the same looped tail, and it joins the next letter.

Questions

How is cursive y different from cursive g?

The top half of y is open, like a u, and starts with a hump. The top of g is a closed oval. Both have the same lower loop.

Where does the loop of cursive y close?

At the baseline, where the tail crosses the slant. From there the exit rises to the next letter.

Does cursive capital Y join the next letter?

Yes, from the end of its lower loop, so a name such as Yusuf stays joined.
