How to write a cursive capital H

  1. Start just below the top line with a small wave and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Lift the pencil. Start at the top line on the right and pull a second slant down to the baseline.
  3. Go back up the right slant to the middle, make a small loop to the left and cross back to the right.

On these sheets the letter after capital H starts on its own.

How to write a cursive lowercase h

  1. From the baseline, swing up to the top line, loop back to the left and pull a slant down to the baseline.
  2. Go back up the slant a little way and make a hump over to the right.
  3. Come down to the baseline and end with a curve up.

Joining cursive h to other letters

h starts with the same tall loop as l, b and k. In sh, ch, th and wh the join has to climb from the end of the first letter all the way to the top line, and these pairs are among the most written in English, so they are worth a page of their own.

The hump of h begins part way up the slant, not from the very bottom; starting it at the baseline leaves a wide gap that looks like li. h leaves from the baseline.

Cursive H and print H

Print h is a tall line and a hump, and cursive h keeps both, adding the loop at the top. Capital H has two slants and a looped crossbar instead of two straight lines and a bar.

Questions

Why are sh, ch and th hard in cursive?

Each one ends low and then needs a long climb to the top of the h. Children often lift the pencil halfway. Practice the pairs alone first, then in words such as ship, chin and this.

How do I tell cursive h from cursive k?

Both have the tall loop. h has a plain rounded hump; k makes a small loop at the midline and then kicks out to the baseline.

Is the crossbar of cursive capital H straight?

No. It starts on the right slant, loops to the left and comes back across, so the bar has a small loop at its left end.
